Magnesium Hydroxide is an inorganic compound which has a low solubility in water. It is also called Milk of magnesia or magnesium(2+) hydroxide.
Water vapor formed during decomposition acts as a protective gas. The heat protection layer (the char layer), containing magnesium hydroxide and carbonized polymer, remains on the polymer surface, thereby suppressing the further burning, and decreases the density of the smoke formed.
Magnesium hydroxide is a white powder of hexagonal or amorphous sheet crystals. The aqueous solution is alkaline with a relative density of 2.36g/cm cubed. Soluble in dilute acid and ammonium salt solutions, almost insoluble in water and alcohol. Solubility in water (18 ℃) is 0.0009 g / 100 g. Easy to absorb air carbon dioxide. In the 350 ℃ is decomposed into magnesium oxide and water. Higher than 500 ℃ water lost into magnesium oxide.
The main function of adding magnesium hydroxide in rubber and other polymers is neutralization of trace levels of hydrogen chloride, which can be released during processing, vulcanization and thermal aging or maintenance.
Magnesium hydroxide is used practically for all types of plastics and filled copolymer compositions based on PVC, PA PS, PP, PE, PET, EVA IPM etc. as a highly non-toxic, inorganic flame retardant, filler and smoke suppressive additive.
Synthetic magnesium hydroxide, as an effective halogen-free flame retardant and smoke suppressant, has the following characteristics and advantages:
