What does a small amount of MgO bring to ceramics?
In the preparation and production of some advanced ceramics, MgO is a common additive, what is its role? What changes will it bring to the ceramics during sintering? Let's take a look at some cases.
Influence of MgO on alumina ceramics
Influence of MgO on sintering temperature and densification of alumina ceramics
Firstly, as a common sintering assistant, magnesium oxide can effectively reduce the sintering temperature of alumina ceramics. Cheng Cheng et al. prepared alumina ceramics by spark plasma sintering (SPS) using high-purity A-al2o3 powder as raw material and MgO as sintering agent, studied the effects of MgO addition amount and sintering temperature on the densification process and microstructure of alumina ceramics, and analyzed the diffusion and evolution of pores in the sintering process. The results show that adding appropriate amount of MgO can reduce the sintering temperature of alumina ceramics, inhibit the growth of grain, and improve the density. The optimal amount of MgO is 0.25% (mass fraction).
