Effect of particle shape on properties of calcium carbonate

According to the different mineral structures, the particle shapes of calcium carbonate can be divided into cubes, flat bodies, polygons, cuboids, long rods and other irregular shapes. The particle shape has a significant impact on the processing technology, product quality, melt fluidity and mechanical properties of plastic products of the modified masterbatch.

1. Polyhedral, polygonal, and cuboid particles

This type of particle shape has the following characteristics:

Advantages: It has good melt fluidity during modified masterbatch processing, is easy to coat and cross-link with coupling agents, and has less wear on processing equipment.

Disadvantages: When applied to plastic products, it may reduce the mechanical properties of the product, such as tensile strength and flexural modulus.

2. Flat and long rod-shaped particles

This type of particles has a larger specific surface area and has different effects:

Advantages: It can improve the physical properties of plastic products, such as increasing tensile strength and bending strength, and reducing the shrinkage rate of products.

Disadvantages: Due to the large specific surface area, the amount of coupling agent and plasticizer needs to be increased, otherwise it will lead to uneven coating, poor melt fluidity, increased host power and increased machine head resistance, and may even cause overheating and decomposition.
